HUXLEY, Aldous.

Eyeless in Gaza.

Publisher: London, Chatto and Windus, 1938

Stock code: 31922

Price: £950

New edition; first published in 1936. With the author’s magnificent signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, “For Paulette who likes books, affectionately and with regretful apologies that this is not ‘Les Cent-vingt Jours de Sodome’. Aldous H. Christmas 1938”. The decidedly risque mention of de Sade’s least restrained pornographic work would indicate considerable intimacy between author and recipient. Candidates for the true identity of Paulette must include the actress Paulette Goddard - Chaplin’s wife - whom Huxley had met in the late 1930s. This tale of decadence in Hollywood is uncommon in presentation state.

Octavo. Original tan cloth, titles to spine in white, top edge stained tan. An excellent copy.
