First US edition, first printing of the third volume of the author's autobiography, originally published in France in 1963. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper by Beauvoir's lover, author Nelson Algren, "For Jean and Ralph from Nelson". The recipients were Jean and Ralph Gleason, Ralph being an influential San Francisco jazz critic and one of the founding editors of Rolling Stone. Gleason had written positive reviews of Algren's novels and was one of his earliest promoters, gestures for which Algren remained grateful throughout his life.

Large octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt on blue ground and to upper board gilt, red top-stain. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the rubbed and nicked jacket with faded spine panel.
