First edition, first printing. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "To Alice and Christian Gauss from their friend Edmund Wilson August 1929." Gauss was a professor at Princeton. Wilson and F. Scott Fitzgerald were part of his French literature class through the autumn of 1915. Axel's Castle was shaped by Gauss's lectures on the 19th century.
Octavo. Original dark blue boards, titles to upper board and spine in light blue. With the dust jacket. Endpapers lightly browned, small split to foot of spine, white dust jacket age toned, more so to the spine, corners and spine tips nicked.
