First editions of the two volumes of this important memoir by one of the key figures in the wartime and immediate post-war administration of Mesopotamia-Iraq. Inscribed on the front free endpaper of vol. I: "W. E. O'Reilly with the compliments and good wishes of the writer, Xmas 1930," and with O'Reilly's ownership inscription "British Legation, Caracas, Venezuela" to the front free endpaper of vol. II. O'Reilly was a career diplomat, serving in South America and the Near East; acting high commissioner, Vladivostock, 1919; minister to Bolivia, 1919; Guatemala, 1924; Albania, 1926; Venezuela 1926-1932. He retired in 1932. With a loosely inserted flyer for the "Mesopotamian & Persian Forces Dinner Club", annual subscription five shillings, together with an offprinted review of the first volume from the Times.

2 volumes, large octavo. Original black cloth, title gilt to spines. 60 plates in all, and 6 folding maps, 4 of them in an end-pocket to volume I. Heads and tails of the spines a little crumpled, slight split to the spine edge of the second volume, but overall a very good set.
