BECKETT, Samuel.
More Pricks Than Kicks.
First edition, first impression of the author's first published book of fiction (preceded only by the poem Whoroscope and his essay Proust). This is certainly Beckett's scarcest regularly published book. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the title page, "to Molly with much love 40 years later from Sam". And with the recipient Mollie Roe's pencil ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Molly (or Mollie) Roe was Beckett's first cousin with whom he had been particularly close from early childhood. They remained in contact throughout their lives as evidenced by this inscription which would appear to date from the mid 1970s. Copies of the first edition of More Pricks than Kicks are of considerable scarcity in collectable condition; examples in dust jacket are rare. We know of a tiny handful of which only one other would seem to be inscribed.
Octavo. Original tan cloth, titles to spine in blue, top edge stained tan. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter green morocco folding case. Pages just a little toned, small bookseller's label to lower pastedown, lettering to spine just beginning to flake, an excellent copy in the rubbed and somewhat frayed dust jacket, missing a piece along the front fold and a few smaller pieces at the corners.20th Century Literature
