First edition, first printing. Inscribed and with an autograph letter signed by the author. This copy was originally in the library of typographer and graphic designer Will Ransom. His bookplate on the rear pastedown states that he acquired the book in 1941 directly from the author. Loosely inserted into the book is a typed letter signed of April 1957 from Hal Stebbins to the author: "Dear Merle: Don't ask me how or where I got it. Just autograph it please!". On the verso of the letter Merle replies, "Hal! This is a real rare item have not seen one in years. You will have fun with it! Even I can laugh NOW but it was just sweat then! Merle". He has also inscribed the half-title, "1957. To Hal Stebbins One of my favorite friends, gets one of my favorite books! Yours, Merle". Stebbins was an advertising executive and probably knew Merle through his graphic design and advertising work.
Octavo. Original black cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and upper board in red, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the rubbed, creased, nicked, and partially tanned jacket.
