First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author to John Buchan on the half-title, "Dear John, I've stepped into your territory. Forgive me! Affectionately, Hugh Walpole. March '30". Loosely inserted is a double-sided note in Walpole's hand reading, "April 3. 30, Dear Old John, That was a noble letter! I shall treasure it always. I really took such a risk in venturing in to such dangerous country and approval from you makes me very happy and proud. There are millions of ways in which the work should have been better but if I let the flow go I let everything go. That's the devil of it. If I'm not spontaneous I'm nothing. Well thank you again for being so generous and making me so encouraged. Affectionately, Hugh". Buchan was famous for his novels of Scotland, and this was Walpole's first attempt at a novel set in that region.
Octavo. Original green cloth elaborately blind panelled, titles to spine and upper board gilt, map endpapers, green top-stain. Very lightly rubbed at extremities, half-title faintly toned. A superb copy.
