First Edition, First Impression. With the author’s signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, “With love, and very much gratitude, A. S. Byatt Jan, 1964”. Beneath this inscription is the ownership signature of C. Day Lewis. Lewis edited the book and is said to have had an affair with Byatt.

Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine in gold. With the dust jacket. Minor biro mark to lower edge of book, jacket spine slightly sunned and a closed tear to the bottom edge of the front panel, an excellent copy.
