Second and best edition, published just three months after the first, and containing an account of events following the disaster at Maiwand. This copy inscribed by the author on the title page; "To Winston S. Churchill from H. Hensman." Hensman was the "embedded" correspondent with Roberts's forces for the Allahabad Pioneer, the Indian newspaper for which Churchill was to report on the campaigns of the Malakand field force. Hensman was a colleague of Kipling's and a good friend of Churchill's military mentor Sir Ian Hamilton, who described him as "wiser than most on most matters" and "one of the kindest and best," he was also reputed to be the best bridge player in India. This account is widely recognized as one of the most authoritative contemporary accounts.

One map misfolded, now re-pressed and with some short splits on the folds professionally repaired, light toning, a handsome copy.
