First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to the French translator of her books on the front free endpaper, "To Louis Gillet with my friendly remembrances. Edith Wharton. September 1928". With eight corrections in the author's hand to pages 136, 147, 221, 234, 248, 304, 338, and 342.
Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and upper board in yellow. Spine very slightly rolled, light spotting to edges and toning to endpapers. An excellent copy.
