First edition, first impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "Eilean Aigas Laura Lovat from Vita". Laura Lovat (1892-1965), was the wife of Simon Joseph Fraser (1871-1933), fourteenth Lord Lovat, a leading Catholic aristocrat and chief of clan Fraser. Eilean Aigas is a private island in the River Beauly, on the Lovat family estate in Scotland. The hunting lodge there had a particularly beautiful garden: presumably Vita was staying as a guest at the time of the inscription.
