First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to the film's narrator, "For Buzz (Voice) Meredith with great appreciation, John Steinbeck [with a drawing of a duck] (This duck is created without taking the pen from the paper) (it is easy to do)". Oliver Burgess Meredith (1907–1997), known as Burgess Meredith, was one of the most accomplished actors of the century. Early in his career he was favourably noted for his portrayal of George Milton in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, and he and Steinbeck later became close friends.
Quarto. Original beige cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to upper board in green. With the dust jacket. 136 illustrations from film stills. Small spot to edge of upper board, light spotting and toning to endpapers. An excellent copy in the slightly rubbed and toned jacket with a few minor scuffs.
