First edition, first printing. Only 5,000 copies were printed. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "To my dearest Ruth [Hart] Ole! Nelle Harper Lee (underlined)". Two ink lines just affecting the inscription. The recipient was Lee's literary agent's secretary and received this copy at the time of publication. Despite its obvious condition problems, an excellent contemporary presentation copy of an undisputed literary masterpiece.
Octavo. Original green cloth-backed brown boards, titles to spine in brown. With the dust jacket. Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Contents a little shaken, child's scribble defacing one page and upper board, spine a touch faded but a better-than-good copy in the worn and internally repaired dust jacket.
