First Edition. With the photographer's signed presentation inscription on the half title page, "a Ruta / avec mon affection / Henri". The recipient was Ruta Sadoul, wife of the writer and critic George Sadoul and founder of the eponymous cinematic prize with which Cartier-Bresson was associated in his final years. The Sadouls had been intimate friends of the photographer for decades. Presentation copies of this recently deceased master of photography are very uncommon. Particularly on his photographic publications.
Large quarto. Original white boards, titles to upper board and spine in black. With the dust jacket. With hundreds of photographic illustrations by Cartier-Bresson. An excellent copy in rather ragged but entire dust jacket.
