BECKETT, Samuel.
Waiting for Godot.
Tragicomedy in 2 acts.
Evergreen paperback edition. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the title page, "For Nancy [Cunard] with love from Samuel Paris April 1956", and with Cunard's pencil initials to the first blank. The close association between Cunard and Beckett began in Paris in 1930. Her press put up a prize for an original poem on the subject of time, which Beckett won with Whoroscope. Part of his prize was publication of what would be his first published book. Cunard used Beckett's services on future Hours Press projects such as Henry Music and perhaps most famously as a translator of many pieces in her Negro Anthology. Their friendship survived throughout the remainder of Cunard's life to her death in 1965. A stunning association.
Octavo. Original wrappers printed in black. Housed in a quarter black morocco box. Browning to two leaves from inserted newspaper clipping, wrappers lightly marked backstrip tanned. Very good.
