WELLS, H. G.
What Is Coming? A Forecast of Things after the War.
First Edition, First Impression. With the author's initialled presentation inscription to the first blank, "AE from HG". The recipient was the Irish poet and activist George William Russell who wrote always under the sobriquet AE. This rather uncommon and poorly produced book collects a series of articles published in two journals between January and June of 1916. Whilst the underlying assumptions presume the defeat of Germany and little is permitted in criticism of the general policies of the wartime government Wells writes far more here than some mere screed of propaganda. The essays were probably composed just prior to the Irish uprising and no mention is made of the events in Dublin that Easter. The two writers were in fact more obviously connected not by their politics but rather by their separate mastery of the mystery story. Both were instrumental in the development of what we now routinely call science fiction.
Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to upper board in blind and to spine gilt. Page stock browned - endemic to this printing - spine dull, cloth a little bubbled. Very good.
