Stoker, Bram

Rare books by Bram Stoker, including first editions and signed and finely bound copies of Dracula and other novels.

Bram Stoker (1847–1912) was an Irish theatre manager and gothic novelist, the author of Dracula and creator of the modern vampire genre. As an amateur theatre critic he became friends with Henry Irving, who made him the manager of the Lyceum in 1878. Successful in his career, Stoker had time to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional author. He had published his first novella, “The Primrose Path” in a periodical in 1875, and his first book, a guidebook for Irish civil servants, in 1879. He followed these with a number of works, including three adventure novels published between 1891 and 1895. In 1890 he began writing a story about a vampire based loosely on history, folktales, and older horror literature. Published in 1897, Dracula was an immediate success and went through 11 printings in its author’s lifetime. Stoker wrote a further ten books, but it was Dracula, with its combination of gothic horror and late Victorian moral and sexual concerns, that has retained its hold on the public’s imagination.
