Hemingway, Ernest
Rare books by Ernest Hemingway, including first editions and signed and finely bound copies.
Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was an American novelist and war correspondent famous for the stark realism of his work. Raised in Illinois, he served as an ambulance driver on the Italian front during the First World War and then became a foreign correspondent in Paris. There he joined the “Lost Generation” of artists and writers and in 1923 published his first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems. His journalistic training and admiration of modernists such as James Joyce and T. S. Eliot led him to develop a spare and deceptively simple prose style that belied the complex emotional layering of his novels and short stories. His love of the wilderness and big game hunting provided a hyper-masculine framework for much of his oeuvre, and experiences overseas and in wartime conditions inspired such classics as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and For Whom the Bell Tolls. Hemingway’s bibliography is particularly complex, and careful attention must be paid to the issue points of his first editions.
