Fitzgerald, F. Scott
Rare books by F. Scott Fitzgerald, including first editions and signed and finely bound copies.
F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was an American author of novels and short stories set largely during the 1920s, the decade for which he coined the term “Jazz Age”. Fitzgerald began writing early in life, publishing his first novel at the age of twenty-four. This Side of Paradise was a semi-autobiographical work based on his college years and his courting of the debutante Zelda Sayre. It was also a commentary on the ideals and failures of his generation, who had come of age during the First World War and now faced a radically changed and more morally ambiguous world. Fitzgerald would continue to explore these themes in his later books such as The Beautiful and the Damned, and his masterpiece The Great Gatsby, both of which focused on wealthy and dissolute young Americans. His writings also incorporated aspects of his troubled relationship with Zelda, particularly the novel Tender is the Night. An alcoholic with ongoing financial problems, Fitzgerald supplemented his income by writing short stories for magazines like The Saturday Evening Post, some of the most famous being “Bernice Bobs Her Hair”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, and “The Diamond As Big as the Ritz”. He also worked as a scriptwriter for several years, and his disillusionment with Hollywood led to the writing of his unfinished and posthumously published novel, The Last Tycoon.
