[DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge] CARROLL, Lewis.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Publisher: London: [Richard Clay for] Macmillan and Co., 1866
Stock code: 59372
Price: £20,000 Currency Conversion
First published edition, in the earliest state with pale blue endpapers (rather than the more usual dark green), with inverted "S" in the last line of contents page. Famously, the first edition of 2,000 copies was recalled by Dodgson, due to what he (or Tenniel) felt to be the unsatisfactory printing of Tenniel's illustrations, and was never offered for public sale. For this new edition the book was entirely re-set by Richard Clay and was published in November 1865 (though dated the following year). It is this version which formed the basis for all future Macmillan editions. The unused sheets of the 1865 Alice went to Appleton's for use in the first American edition, published in May 1866.
Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-stamped, spine gilt-lettered, edges gilt, Burn & Co binder's ticket on rear endpaper. Custom quarter red morocco solander box. Electrotyped frontispiece, and 42 illustrations from the woodcuts by Dalziel after John Tenniel. Spine ends rubbed, rear joint split, front joint rubbed and with two short splits towards head, both covers with single small stains, rear inner hinge with superficial cracking in places, a handful of leaves standing a little proud, still a very good copy.
