Illustration with text drawn by Hugh Lofting used as the title page for the first and subsequent printings of The Story of Doctor Dolittle, the first of the renowned series of children's novels about a man who can converse with animals. Although Lofting was born in England, and Doctor Dolittle was set in the fictional village of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh in the West Country, the first book in the series was originally published in the US.
