[BESTALL, Alfred]

The New Adventures of Rupert.

Publisher: [London] Daily Express Publications, 1936

Stock code: 44632

Price: £5,000 Currency Conversion

First edition of the first Rupert the Bear book in the large "annual" format that was to be familiar to generations of British children. Mary Tourtel had retired in 1935 due to failing eyesight and Bestall was appointed her successor. His work is generally recognised as an improvement on Tourtel's in terms of both plot and illustration, with backgrounds inspired by the landscape around the River Conwy in North Wales, where Bestall's family had a cottage. Bestall's version has become the definitive representation of Rupert.

Quarto. Original scarlet cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in black. With the colour printed dust jacket. Illustrated throughout, four frames to a page printed in black and red. Trace of spotting to endpapers, but a superb copy in the exceptionally bright dust jacket with some trivial loss at extremities and small stain to the back panel.
