The photograph was taken late in 1941 and circulated quite widely throughout 1942 in postcard form. For the 1950 general election the Conservative Party revived the image as a poster and we believe the present photogravure to be contemporaneous with that. What is certain is that this is a rare and charismatic portrait and exceptionally uncommon signed. Framed on the verso is a typed letter on Downing Street letterhead from Churchill's personal private secretary thanking the original owner of this picture for a kindness and confirming that Churchill had been delighted to sign the image.
16 x 12 inches. A head and shoulders photograph entitled Our Skipper in the lower margin. Framed behind glass in dark brown wood. Signed "Winston S. Churchill" in the lower margin. Light crease to top left corner with a dab of restoration but an excellent example.
