First edition of the controversial Gallipoli volume of Churchill's First World War history. This copy inscribed by Churchill three days before publication on the second front blank; "To Juliet from Winston. Oct 27. 1923" - Juliet being Lady Juliet Duff - and with her attractive engraved bookplate to the front pastedown. Juliet was the daughter of the 4th Earl of Lonsdale, and has been described by some as a rather plain, and not very bright, socialite. It is a matter of record that Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford considered her to be a bore, which may not entirely militate against her. What is certain is that she accumulated a côterie of highly intelligent and accomplished admirers including Maurice Baring, Cecil Beaton, Hilaire Belloc, and Churchill. Both Winston and Clementine were extremely fond of Juliet, who remained one of Winston's truest friends through the inter-war, "wilderness years." An excellent association.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, title in gilt to the spine and in blind in a small panel to the lower fore-corner of the upper board. 7 coloured maps, 5 folding, 2 full-page, 2-page facsimile. A little rubbed, bubbling on the spine, light toning, a touch of foxing to the fore-edge.
