First edition. The author's own copy with his bookplate to the front pastedown and a series of reviews mounted on blanks bound in after the Index. Tipped onto the front free endpaper, is a typed letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill") and subscribed ("Yours vy tly") to the author, thanking him for a copy of his book: "Although, as you know, I would rather that nothing of this kind had been published, yet I should like to recognise the great consideration and courtesy with which you have treated me, and to thank you for all the friendly things you say..." The letter is dated 30 December 1927, one day before the publication of the book. Bechhofer Roberts's biography of Churchill ran through two further editions before the end of the year. A fourth edition, with an evaluation of the new premier, was published by Newnew in 1940.
Octavo, pp. 271. Bound in the original blue publisher's cloth, with gilt title to spine and front board. Tipped in are a one-page quarto letter and many clippings of newspaper reviews. Head and tail of spine bumped, some rubbing to extremities, internally very clean. The letter has a small part of the top right-hand corner torn away.
