First thus. An excellent set in a handsome, perhaps provincial, contemporary binding. All front pastedowns with the ownership of S. Brough, dated 1804, and the armorial bookplates of Benjamin Haworth, most likely Benjamin Blades Haworth (17631836), the son and heir of the wealthy merchant Benjamin Haworth. The family lived at Haworth Hall, formerly Hull Bank House, in Cottingham. The library containing many of Benjamin's books was sold in 1936.
15 volumes, octavo (208 × 121 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, flat spines, black morocco title-pieces to the second compartment, red morocco roundel numbering-pieces to the fifth, compartments gilt with zig-zag tools, single foliate rolled panel to the boards, edges sprinkled red. Bound with the half-titles. Lightly rubbed at the edges, head- and tailcaps, joints, but all the joints completely sound, which is extremely unusual with streaked or tree calf, contents clean.
