First editions. William Beloe (17561817) was an author and translator and, from 1803 to 1806, the keeper of printed books at the British Museum. This work, originally planned to span only two volumes but eventually growing to six, is the result of his researches there. The final two volumes, published in 1811 and 1812, are not included with this set.
4 volumes, octavo (210 × 125 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, spines gilt in compartments, yellow endpapers, marbled sides, speckled edges. Bookplates and pencilled call numbers to each front pastedown. Bindings a little rubbed with some worn areas along the edges, spotting and offsetting to contents. An excellent set.
