Third edition, the final definitive text and the first edition to be illustrated, the first really popular edition of the novel. Mary Shelley incorporated most of the changes introduced by William Godwin into the 1823 second edition as well as numerous other revisions, including an entirely new chapter and the famous "Introduction" in which she elaborates the tale of the novel's genesis at the nocturnal storytelling session with Shelley, Byron and Polidori at the Villa Diodati. Mary lived for twenty more years, but the 1831 edition is her final text revision. The frontispiece is the first visual depiction of Frankenstein and the Creature.

Small octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full black morocco, titles and extra decoration to spine gilt, triple rule to boards with floral cornerpieces gilt, turn-ins with floral cornerpieces gilt, plain-coated burgundy endpapers, all edges gilt. With engraved vignette title and frontispiece by Chevalier after Holst. Small water stain to the edges of the frontispiece and vignette title otherwise a fine copy.
