First edition. William Milligan Sloane was professor of history at Princeton University, and editor of both the Political Science Quarterly and the American Historical Review.
4 volumes, large quarto (294 × 207 mm). Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full burgundy morocco; spines gilt in compartments with Napoleonic devices between five raised bands, gilt lettered in two compartments and dated at foot; sides with wide gilt borders, the imperial monogram at corners, enclosing on the front cover a central oval with a hand-coloured miniature portrait mounted behind glass (v. 1 Napoleon; v. 2 Maria Letizia Bonaparte, his mother; v. 3 Josephine; v. 4 Prince Louis Napoleon), the ovals with a decorative brass frame and surrounded by gilt bee devices on the leather, on the back cover large imperial monogram blocked in gilt; white moiré silk doublures and endpapers, turn-ins with double gilt rolls all round, gilt edges. Individually housed in cloth solander boxes, titles to spine gilt. Colour frontispieces and 276 plates (colour, tinted and black and white), 15 maps. A fine set.
