This Riverside Press edition, one of a limited edition of 550 numbered copies of what was for a century the standard reference work on American History. The editor, Justin Winsor (18311897) was a writer and prominent librarian at the Boston Public Library and later at Harvard University, where he professionalized library management and became one of the US's first academic librarians. He was also a founding member of both the ALA and the AHA and edited numerous volumes on American History. This set of his important history of America is illustrated throughout and handsomely bound in contemporary red morocco.
8 volumes, tall quarto (320 × 225mm). Contemporary red half morocco, spine decorated at lettered in gilt, five raided bands, marbled boards, top edge gilt others uncut, marbled endpapers. Numerous illustrations in text, including frontispiece portrait of Justin Windsor, maps, facsimiles, portraits, etc. Some light wear at extremities, corners a little rubbed, spines slightly darkened, interior bright and extremely clean. An excellent set.
