Stephens's edition was first published in 1702, with a supplement including Bacon papers found in the collections of his cousin Robert Harley, later earl of Oxford, published by his Stephens's widow in 1734.

Small quarto (204 × 155 mm). Contemporary calf, double gilt rules, red sprinkled edges, rebacked to style with red morocco label gilt. Portrait frontispiece, folded at foot to preserve engraved area. Title in red and black. Boards rubbed, corners worn, first page of preface dust-soiled at upper margin, generally very good, the paper strong and clean.
