First edition of this famous fete book, a record of the festivities given by the city of Strasbourg to celebrate the visit of Louis XV, and also his recovery from a dangerous illness contracted at Metz in 1744. The original binding by Antoine-Michel Padeloup le jeune, signed with his engraved ticket at bottom of the engraved title page, forms a stylistic entity with the book.
Large folio (630 x 470 mm). Original binding by Padeloup (see below) of contemporary mottled calf, covers with a gilt border roll enclosing arms at each corner, in centres large arms of Louis XV, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, the binding neatly rebacked. Engraved throughout. Title within a cartouche by M.Marvie after Le Parmentier, equestrian portrait of Louis XV engraved by J. G. Will after C. Parrocel, J. Chevallier, and J.B. le Moine, 11 double-page views engraved by J. P. Le Bas after Weis, 20 pages of descriptive text within decorative borders and including vignette head- and tailpieces by Marvie after Weis. Bookplate of William Huntly Campbell (d. 1844). Small stain to edge of plate mark, but not the image, of plate 8, marginal browning to last leaf of text, a very good copy.
