First Dent edition. After Richard Bentley, J. M. Dent was the next publisher to take up Jane Austen's novels, and continued publishing them into the 1960s. Dent's ten-volume set of the novels, first published in 1892, is the first to have any critical apparatus. The illustrations are after William Cubitt Cooke.

2 volumes bound in 1, octavo (170 × 105 mm). Contemporary prize binding of red calf, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, green morocco label, Hayleybury College roundel to upper board. double line ruling to boards, top edge, and inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers. 2 portrait frontispieces and 5 plates. Prize bookplate to front free endpaper. Binding lightly rubbed, spine tanned and marked, contents a little toned.
