(BRITISH POETS)
The Aldine Edition of the British Poets.
The Aldine Edition, one of the best and most scholarly of the 19th-century collected editions. George Bell (1814-1890) began his career by publishing quality educational books, including editions of the classics newly edited by F. A Paley. He also developed a strong reputation in art, history, and literature, publishing the authoritative edition of Pepys's diary as well as critical editions of Swift and Shakespeare. He purchased this, the Aldine series of the poets, and made numerous edits and additions, increasing the number of volumes significantly. An authoritative and very handsomely bound set.
48 volumes, octavo. Green straight-grained half morocco, titles and box design to spines gilt, raised bands, cloth covered boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. With frontispieces and vignette titles. A beautiful set, clean and in near fine condition.
