(CHIVERS BINDING) KIPLING, Rudyard.
The Five Nations.
The binding is signed in gilt at the foot of the rear turn-in, and is a characteristic example of the "vellucent bindings" produced by Cedric Chivers of Bath from 1903. In these bindings the painting is on paper under the vellum, rather than on the underside of the vellum as in the Edwards of Halifax bindings.
Octavo (186 × 117 mm). "Vellucent" binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath in transparent vellum over blue paper, with watercolour painting under the vellum, the front cover with an inset of a war scene within an outer panel of the sea, the rear cover with a sky-blue panel, spine lettered in blue, the design heightened with gold tooling, watercolour endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut, housed in a protective slipcase. Small gift inscription dated 1918. A little spotting to uncut edges and outer leaves, but an excellent copy.
