Originally published in parts, from 1802 to 1819, this is one of the best sources for social, economic and technical information of the period. Rees wrote much of the contents himself, but for special subjects employed the best authorities of his day, eg. Dalton for chemistry, Sir J.E. Smith for botany, Dr. Burney for music, etc. As for the illustrations: William Blake was among the engravers. The lasting value of the work rests on the great mass of material on purely practical subjects: architecture, brick-making, canal building, carpentry, clocks & watches, electricity, fireplaces, locks and keys, perspective & perspective machines, pottery, printing, road making, ship building, steam engines, surveying, wind- water- and wiremills.

31 volumes, quarto. Contemporary tan half calf, titles and decorations to spines gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and edgers. Some foxing and stainging to plates, else an attractive set.
