[CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de.]
Don Quixote de La Mancha.
Translated from the Original Spanish by Charles Jarvis. Embellished with Twenty-Four Highly Finished Engravings, from Drawings Designed Expressly for This Edition. In Four Volumes.
First edition thus, with amusing aquatints by Clark, of the celebrated translation of Don Quixote by the Irish-born Charles Jervas (16751739), a member of the literary circle of Addison, Pope and Swift, and also an eminent artist. First published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, Jervas's translation is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original. This edition was published the same year and in the same format as McLean's editions of Hudibras and Gil Blas.
4 volumes, octavo (210 × 130 mm). Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, spines elaborately gilt in compartments, double-line ruling and decorative rolls to boards in gilt and blind, blue endpapers, all edges gilt. 24 coloured engravings signed I. H. Clark. Bindings a little rubbed, some spotting to contents. A very handsomely bound set.
