Memorandums &c. &c. respecting the Unprecedented Treatment which the Army have met with respecting Plunder taken after a Siege,
and of which the Navy serving with the Army divided their more than Ample Share, now Fourteen Years since.
First Edition. "Concerning capture of Charleston and sale of American property" (Howes). Clinton's reputation rests "almost entirely on his service in the American War of Independence [which was] almost always marred by his inability, by what historians have come to see as a disordered personality, to work well with other generals and admirals and to carry out his own plans" (ODNB). Clinton's falling out with Admiral Arbuthnot over the latter's refusal to co-ordinate with his plans was perhaps a key element in the British defeat in America which he here addresses by way of what might be considered a fringe issue. It formed part of Clinton's "destructive pamphlet war" by which he hoped to reclaim his reputation, but as the main subject of this attack, Arbuthnot, died around the time of its issue, it was withdrawn which goes some way to accounting for its scarcity.
