First edition. Dixon was "Killed in action at Wildfontein whilst rescuing a comrade/17th July 1901/Aged 38 years/'Dulce et Decorum Pro Patria Mori" as recorded on the memorial at the British cemetery at Coligny. Under ambush, Kimber saw that the horse of a sergeant, coincidentally named Kimber, had bolted and returned to assist him although "facing a fusillade of bullets." Slip tipped in at the front endpapers records that "the proceeds of the sale of the first edition of this book (without any deduction for cost of production or publication) and the profits of any further edition will be handed over to the South Africa General Mission …" Hackett records that a 6th edition was published in 1915.

Octavo, original buff pictorial cloth., title gilt to spine and upper board along with an image of an IY trooper taking aim with his carbine. Frontispiece and 5 other plates, full-page map. A little rubbed and soiled, some foxing as usual, a very god copy.
