First edition thus, a rather pretty edition which employs copies of the plates first issued by Harding in 1793; "Six plates illustrative of the Castle of Otranto were published by E. & S. Harding in July 1793 to accompany either the Bodoni or the small octavo edition; they were drawn by 'a lady' (Miss Anne Mellicent Clarke) and engraved by Birrell" (Hazen). They are better known from Sivrac's 1795 Italian edition, and these copies are taken from that issue, the letterpress imprint details being, perhaps deliberately, obscured by the gilt borders. The frontispiece, engraved by Thomas Medland from a drawing by Joino, is also from Sivrac's edition.

Octavo (214 × 133 mm). Contemporary green quarter roan, marbled boards. Hand-coloured frontispiece within gilt-rolled border and 6 similar plates. Rubbed, corners worn, some foxing and browning throughout as usual, overall a very good copy.
