First edition. "Forbes spans the era from de Saussere to Alfred Wills and his books are the first English accounts of systematic Alpine exploration and description of various regions." (Neate) Forbes's visit to Norway was part of his extensive researches into glaciation; "Between 1841 and 1851 Forbes made detailed observations of glacier ice velocities across the surface, and at depths, and at different times of the day and different seasons of the year, and proposed what he called the viscous or plastic theory of glacier motion." (ODNB) Much enhanced by the delicately coloured plates from Forbes's own drawings.

Large octavo ( 253 × 167 mm). Original tan embossed cloth, title gilt to spine. Coloured lithographic frontispiece and 9 other similar plates, attractive vignetted wood-engravings to the text, one full-page tinted map, folding coloured map at the rear. Very slightly rubbed, corners bumped, tissue-guard from the frontispiece removed, light toning, a very pretty copy.
