First edition, first issue, with 32pp. inserted adverts dated May 1878 and with two lines of errata at the foot of page x. "This was an extension of the work on climbing plants to show that the same mechanisms hold good for flowering plants in general" (Freeman).

Octavo. Uncut in original green cloth, blind-panelled covers, spine gilt with imprint at foot, brown endpapers. Engraved illustrations and diagrams in text. Gift plate on front pastedown, from Arnold Arthur Peake presented to The Benedictine Community of Prinknash, Gloucester. Library bookplate to front free endpaper. Near contemporary ownership inscription to half title. Ex-library copy. Some light shelf wear particularly to lower corners, with some bumping to head and tail of spine, library label removed from front cover, rear hinge slightly cracked, still a good copy.
