WELLS, H. G.
The Croquet Player. A Story.
First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author to Siegfried Sassoon on the half title, "Siegfried, from H. G., with love to George". George was Sassoon's son, born in 1936, who became a scientist and writer. Loosely inserted are two autograph letters signed from Wells to Sassoon, dated October 28th and November 1st, 1933, organising a dinner party including Cynthia Asquith among the guests. Sassoon and Wells met in 1917, when the younger writer sent his statement against the war to Wells, who was supportive. Sassoon visited Wells in 1922, writing that, "I am grateful to (and full of admiration for) the bristling pugnacious little man for the way he succeeds in influencing (and creating) public opinion in the direction of sanity " With Sassoon's posthumous bookplate.
Octavo. Original grey and black boards, printed paper label to spine. With the Harold Jones dust jacket. An excellent copy in the rubbed, nicked and toned jacket.
