First edition, first impression. The history of the astonishing Douglas Cause, which involved the suspected purchase of French infants by a middle-aged couple in order to obtain an inheritance. The case was launched in 1762, lasted for five years, and was appealed in the House of Lords for a month in 1769. It enthralled the nation, with intellectuals, including Samuel Johnson and Adam Smith, publicly taking sides. This volume includes an introduction to the case, the judgements in the Court of Sessions, speeches in the House of Lords, and an appendix including letters and other documents.
