First editions, first issues. The volumes were issued over three Christmases, 1851-3, though each was dated the following year.
3 volumes, small square octavo. Original reddish-orange cloth, gilt titles and decoration to spine, blind stamped border and gilt pictorial decoration to front board, marbled endpapers and edges. Custom blue half morocco slipcase and chemise. Each volume with a frontispiece by F. W. Topham. Few nicks at spine-ends, second frontispiece a little creased and dusty at fore-edge, a very nice set in the original cloth.
