Freeman (1862–1943) was colonial service surgeon serving in the Gold Coast colony. This pamphlet relates an expedition into west Africa undertaken in 1888, describing the geography, wildlife, vegetation, and local communities. In 1891, after serving in Africa for four years, Freeman contracted Blackwater fever and was invalided home. His persistent ill-health precluded running a medical practice, so he worked as a writer, becoming well-known for his detective novels.

Octavo (240 × 150 mm). Contemporary tan wrappers, typed paper label to upper wrapper. Engravings throughout, colour folding map. Wrappers tanned and lightly rubbed and creased, small chip from lower corner. An excellent copy.
