SWINBURNE, Algernon Charles.
Atalanta in Calydon.
A Tragedy.
First Edition. With p. 84/5 canelled and the misnumbering of p. xiv. This famous and beautifully designed book was the subject of one of Wise's less troubling fictions - he held there to have been only 100 copies in the printed. Swinburne himself wrote of 300. This prompted an American collector to assemble 101 copies to prove the point!
Quarto. Original cream cloth, roundels to upper board - designed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti - gilt, titles to spine gilt, edges untrimmed. Some browning to endpapers as always, cloth spotted, spine darkened, some bubbling to lower board. All in all a classic example of this notoriously vulnerable publication.
