First edition. Sandys (1792–1874) was a music writer and antiquary whose work "laid the foundations for the discovery of the ballad carol which was then in danger of disappearing and becoming forgotten" (ODNB). His two books on Christmas songs and traditions also contributed significantly to the mid-Victorian revival of that festival.

Original cloth bound in. Lithographic frontispiece and 8 plates, engravings throughout. Binding a little scuffed, small spots to lower board, edges and spine faded. An excellent copy.
