Following the Equator.

A Journey Around the World.

First edition, first issue. This copy with the favoured single Hartford imprint, and the signature mark 11 at p.161. Having invested heavily in revolutionary, and flawed, typesetting machinery, by 1894 Twain was practically bankrupt. His solution was to undertake a tour of the British Empire, ensuring an enthusiastic audience for his lectures in every port of call, and providing material for this highly successful account.

Large octavo. Original blue cloth, illustration and design to front board, titles and decoration to spine gilt. Illustrated by 11 different illustrators. Foxing to the tissue guard over frontis and a tear to the plate opposite page 102, otherwise a nice bright copy, a little rubbed to spine.
