Second edition, the first in which Mary Shelley is named as the author; not merely a reprint of the first edition of 1818 as some have supposed. E. B. Murray notes that there are a good many substantive changes in the 1823 edition, though these were probably made by her father William Godwin, who arranged publication of the second edition "for her benefit" while Mary was still living on the continent. Mary, however, accepted the 1823 text as the basis for her own changes made for the 1831 third edition.

2 volumes, duodecimo. Uncut in original blue paper boards, drab paper backstrips, printed spine labels. Custom blue morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Head of vol. I spine chipped, a few trivial marks internally, an excellent copy in original state.
